Commercial Truck Driver Certificate

The Commercial Driver’s License Certificate is only available as a school-to-work Dual Enrollment program to area high school students. The 12-credit certificate provides the ability for students to obtain their Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Upon completion, students will have coursework that will transfer to other colleges, is stackable into allied trades CAS, AAS programs and the Pre-Apprentice Line Program. Students can also enter industries that offer higher salaries to individuals who have their CDL embedded into other occupations such as construction and civil engineering technology.

Objectives

  • To provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to operate a commercial tractor-trailer combination vehicle weighing 26,000 GVW or more.
  • To provide students the opportunity to practice vehicle operating procedures and skills in a safe and supportive environment.
  • To provide a comprehensive curriculum encompassing theory and behind-the-wheel instruction that meets the Department of Transportation and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Entry-Level Driver Training regulation standards.

Outcomes

The Commercial Truck Driver Certificate curriculum is designed to provide a comprehensive education that enables graduates to:

  • Pass the written and skills licensure exam for their  Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL-A).
  • Assume employment in the trucking industry.
  • Complete coursework that transfers into other trades and technical education programs.
  • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills needed to safely operate a commercial tractor-trailer combination vehicle.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking and appropriate driving techniques for emergencies and extreme driving conditions.

Assessment

  • Successful demonstration of behind-the-wheel skills including vehicle inspections, backing and in-town and highway driving.
  • Successful completion of the written and skills CDL-A driver examinations.

Minimum credits for Commercial Truck Driver Certificate: 12
