Generally speaking, Civil Engineers achieve a broad-based education with knowledge of several civil engineering specialties as indicated at www.asce.org/institutes.  Civil Engineering at Montana Tech  means gaining a holistic understanding of many Civil Engineering aspects like the planning, layout, and design of sustainable, residential, commercial, or industrial projects. It also means being exposed to related engineering topics that include: safety, the environment, code compliance and enforcement, and project supervision and decision-making.

The Civil Engineering  program will primarily focus on above-grade scenarios that pertain to commercial, industrial, and other municipal and transportation facilities.  A number of perspectives that include the client’s, the architect’s, the engineer’s, the contractor’s, and the inspector’s will often times be explored as a part of this focus.  

Our program’s aim is to prepare a workforce that can, within a few years of graduation, meet the changing needs of society in both the public and the private sectors. Many of our graduates are doing these things already. Some plan, design, construct, or supervise new structures and systems. Others, operate, inspect, or maintain existing structures and systems.  All that come through our program should feel well positioned to pursue career paths that require professional licensure and other certifications.

Program Mission-Civil Engineering

The Civil Engineering Program at Montana Tech mission is to advance education and practice, and meet the changing needs of society by:

(1) preparing students to pursue civil engineering careers, professional licensure, and advanced degrees;

(2) keeping current and fostering industry relationships and community involvement; and,

(3) executing innovative research, or scholarship, or other opportunities, or all three, in a manner that advances the Civil Engineering profession in collaboration with academia, industry, and government agencies.

Program Educational Objectives-Civil Engineering

The Program Educational Objectives (P.E.O.s) of the B.S. Civil Engineering (B.S.C.E.) program are to produce graduates who are expected to attain the following:

  1. Successfully practice the Civil Engineering profession as demonstrated by :
    1. continued professional employment;
    2. job promotion; and,
    3. expanding career responsibilities and advancement.
  2. Obtain professional registration.
  3. Consider completion of an advanced degree.
  4. Continued professional development as demonstrated by:
    1. society membership and participation
    2. continuing education
    3. engineering related service
