EMET 528 - Materials Recycling & Waste Remediation3 credits (Hrs: 3 Lec.) The course surveys the environmental legislation and regulations relevant to metallurgical and materials processes including RCRA, TSCA & CERCLA. Hazardous waste classifications are defined, as are alternatives for disposal, de-listing, or exclusion. Application of physical, aqueous, and/or thermal processing technologies to remediate waste is illustrated though commodity-specific case histories. The energy, environmental, and economic benefits of recycling are emphasized to help students realize the potential that waste minimization, waste treatment, and recycling holds for valuable materials recovery and, in some cases, energy production. The course includes guest lectures delivered by subject matter experts.
Prerequisite(s): Graduate Standing and/or consent of instructor.
